Woody Rock's Music: Gospel and Hip-Hop, Hand in Hand

Latasha Casey

Entertainment Writer

Woody Rock
Soul Music
Street Date: April 9, 2002

Woody Rock brings a sweet hip-hop/gospel touch to his debut project, Soul Music.

Drawing on his experience with R&B group DruHill, and on his church upbringing, Rock generates a unique sound. Natalie Wilson, The SOP Chorale, the sultry voice of Case and a reunion with members of DruHill all contribute to give listeners a taste of how gospel and hip-hop can go hand in hand.

Soul Music takes the listeners on a spiritual journey. With production help from Warryn Campbell, Nokio and others, Soul Music contains a variety of gospel tunes that should appeal to today's hip-hop generation.

Rock's contemporary sound comes through on the upbeat Testimony and Good to Be Alive, featuring Mary Mary. Men of Standard assist Rock on an astonishing remake of the Winans' classic The Question Is.

Following in the path of gospel artists Kirk Franklin, Fred Hammond and Mary Mary, Woody Rock takes the gospel genre to a higher level. The appealing lyrics and up-to-date beats, which range from slow to up-tempo, capture the listener's attention and give the project multiple flavors. Soul Music has something for everyone, from down-home melodies to hip-hop beats.

Woody Rock tells about the goodness of God as he pays tribute to his mother in I Won't Complain . DJ Tony Boston helps Woody get the listener jumping with his contribution to Clap Your Hands, a dynamic praise song.

Soul Music shows that Woody Rock's solo career is heading in the right direction. With Soul Music, Woody really rocks.
