(CNSNews.com) - A gunman shot dead up to 32 people and injured 15 more in two separate shooting incidents at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Va., Monday morning, in what is being called the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history.
Two people were shot around 7:15 am Monday in the first shooting at a freshman dormitory - West Ambler Johnston Hall - and two hours later dozens more were killed in a second round of gunfire at Norris Hall, an engineering building.
The shooter was "deceased" in Norris Hall, officials said. Police would not say whether the person, described as an Asian male, had been killed by police or took his own life.
"Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions," said Virginia Tech University President Charles Steger. "The university is shocked and indeed horrified."
Classes were canceled for Monday and Tuesday.
President Bush expressed "deep concern" for the victims, their families, students and professors. "He was horrified," said White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino. "The president believes that there is a right for people to bear arms, but that all laws must be followed," she said.
Bush said his administration would do everything possible to assist with the investigation.
"Schools should be places of safety and sanctuary and learning. When that sanctuary is violated, the impact is felt in every American classroom and every American community," the president said.
"Today, our nation grieves with those who have lost loved ones at Virginia Tech. We hold the victims in our hearts, we lift them up in our prayers, and we ask a loving God to comfort those who are suffering today," he added.
The House of Representatives observed a moment of silence Monday afternoon for the victims of the shootings.
Prior to Monday's incident, the worst peacetime mass shooting in U.S. history took place in 1991 in Killeen, Texas, when George Hennard drove his pickup truck into a Luby's Cafeteria, fatally shooting 23 people and turning the gun on himself.
The Virginia Tech shooting took place four days before the anniversary of the 1999 Columbine High School massacre, which until Monday was considered one of the deadliest school shootings in the nation's history. Two teenage students at the school in Littleton, Colo., shot dead 12 students and a teacher before killing themselves.
