Praying for (Rather Than Complaining about) the Election

Praying for (Rather Than Complaining about) the Election

Steve Hall

"'We do not know what to do, but our eyes are upon you.' All the men of Judah, with their wives and children and little ones, stood there before the LORD." 2 Chronicles 20:12-13

These verses of scripture come from a time when God's people were facing a vast army from several nations that seemed unstoppable in human terms. There, one of the few kings who sought the Lord in that day stood before God and his people to encourage them to pray for help. They did, and God heard them.

Our national situation, as trying as it is, pales in comparison to that situation and, at least from a physical standpoint, to many situations overseas. The poverty and persecution that are common in many countries is still farther from most of us than they are to many. But this passage of scripture is one of many powerful reminders that God can do what seems impossible when his people cry out to him.

Over the past few months I've seen and heard a number of fellow Christians complain loudly about many things to do with the election: the positions of the candidates (both of them) on various important issues, the coverage (or non-coverage) of the media, the concerns about voter fraud, and the easy passes one side seems to get from the press. Many of these points are well taken, but the question I’m asking is: what good does the griping do? And is our murmuring accomplishing anything but briefly making us feel better while leaving our souls in a bad state, with much-needed prayers going unsaid?

I'd like to suggest another course in the few days we have between now and the election: let's repent of our complaining, and set aside time - good time - to pray, even fast, for the election and the next president. Our pastor has asked members of our church who are able to fast and pray this week to do so, including this Sunday when we will have an evening prayer service. With so much at stake in this election I believe it to be a wise suggestion.

The principle of God's people praying for the welfare of the governments over them stretches from the Old Testament to the New. In Jeremiah 29:7, God told the Israelites to pray for the pagan nation that conquered their own, Babylon, where they were now captive exiles: "Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper." This passage is critical, because it shows that, a) God wants his people to pray for the nation where they are because, b) he knows that their welfare is tied to the welfare of that nation. In the New Testament, Paul's command to pray for "kings and all who are in authority" – including, at that time, the Roman Emperor – is consistent with this same principle (1 Tim. 2:2).

The article is right, but here's something that 95% of christian don't do. The Bible said GOD gave dominion to mankind, how to we used this authority? We the people vote on a canidate, put him,or her in office and thats the end of that until the next election. We are suppose to let our elective candidate know how we feel on all issues and tell them how we want them to vote. I have been doing this since 1999 when I found out and began to grow as a christian.Since then as I speak to christian I have found not one who does this.It amaze me we get paid on our job for during it,yet we don't hold our elective official to this standard,WHY?? We have local office we can contact, and a telephone to contact them in washington, also their E-Mail address, yet we do nothing. Faith without works is dead.Fifty Million Christian in this nation yet we put a candidate in our highest office who supports abortions and illegal immigrants. The Bible has someting to say on both issues.

What a wonderful story and instruction. I am so grateful and thankful to God to hear this from Christains since I have recently heard some very troubling radio shows where christains are predicting the future as "mediums" or "physics" which are not pleasing to God. They are predicting all kinds of doomsday type predictions unless the GOP does this or that and it sounds very hateful and not at all christain like. I am also concerned that my brothers and sisters in Christ are not being led astray in any way. I believe that this election was nothing short of a miracle, and only the type of miracle our God, the father of Jesus Christ could do. I hope and pray that we remember that God is the lord of our lives and our country and that the president is only the leader of the "land". Let us put back and keep our country in "Gods hands". Please do not hate or be led astray, let us keep our eyes on God, not any man. Let our God lead and protect Obama, in Jesus name, amen.

Very well written article. I belive that we cannot look to the election, or any one candidate to solve the problems of America, or the world for that matter.

Any nation that falls away from God will end up being turned upside down. And, unless America as a nation repent and return to God, things will only get worse.

Additionally, we, the people of God, have sat idly by, when the power to bring change rest with us. God has never commanded the heathen to pray, but Chritendom has also been swayed into a type of religion who's God is not Jehovah.

This nation needs to return to God.
