Bill Bennett Needs Our Prayers

Bill Bennett Needs Our Prayers

Cal Thomas

Syndicated columnist

Newsweek magazine has a story this week about Bill Bennett’s gambling.  According to the magazine -- and other stories-- he has gambled $8 million over ten years.   His wife denies it was actually that much.

Liberals are jumping all over Bennett for being a hypocrite and therefore unqualified to speak of virtue when he has indulged in a vice of his own.  By that standard, the Bible would never have been written, because all who put pen to parchment were sinners, though they were guided by God’s spirit.

What Bennett has said about virtue and the decline of America is still true.   What the writers of the Bible said about sin was also true, even though the ones writing it were sinners.

King David penned most of the Psalms, even though he had an affair with Bathsheba and arranged for her husband to be killed in war.

Bennett’s critics really hate what he said, more than who he is.   That’s because they have little interest in the things of God.

I believe Bill Bennett will get through this.   He’s already promised not to gamble again.   He needs our prayers, not condemnation.

I’m Cal Thomas in Washington.
