California Assembly Passes 'Gay Marriage' Bill

Susan Jones

Morning Editor

(CNSNews.com) - The California State Assembly on Wednesday approved legislation giving homosexual couples the same rights that state law confers on married couples.

The bill - AB 205 - says, "registered domestic partners shall have the same rights, protections, and benefits, and shall be subject to the same responsibilities, obligations, and duties under law as are granted to and imposed upon spouses."

A conservative group that led the fight against the bill notes that it was authored by lesbian Assembly member Jackie Goldberg (D-Los Angeles), and it received the minimum number of votes needed for passage.

In a news release, the Campaign for California Families said the bill reverses Proposition 22, the Protection of Marriage Initiative, in which 61 percent of California voters said marriage was the union of one man and one woman. Proposition 22 passed three years ago.

Randy Thomasson executive director of the Campaign for California Families, said AB 205 is, in effect, a homosexual marriage bill.

"The Democrat politicians apparently have no problem reversing the people's vote on marriage, the foundation of family and society," Thomasson said in a press release. "It is high time for concerned citizens to rise up and fight the corruption in Sacramento. If reversing the people's vote on marriage doesn't demonstrate political arrogance, I don't know what does," she added.

The bill now goes to the state Senate - also controlled by Democrats. Gov. Gray Davis has not yet taken a position on the bill, CCF said.
