Jesse Jackson Says Kerry Would Boost Anti-War Movement

Boston (CNSNews.com) - Electing Sen. John Kerry would be a boon for the anti-war movement, Jesse Jackson told a crowd of left-wing activists Thursday on the final day of the "Take Back America" conference.

"There's a thing I wanted to say last night that I didn't say. I didn't because I made a judgment," Jackson said in reference to his prime-time speech at the Democratic National Convention. "When Kerry wins, the anti-war movement will get bigger the next day."

Jackson was the featured guest at the Campaign for America's Future conference, which concluded Thursday after three days of speeches from the likes of Michael Moore, Howard Dean and Dennis Kucinich. Like those three figures, Jackson also opposed the war in Iraq.

The partisan crowd gave Jackson a standing ovation and repeatedly applauded throughout his speech. He received some of loudest cheers when he suggested Osama bin Laden would be found on Halloween, days before the Nov. 2 election.

Jackson railed about many of the same issues as he did Wednesday at the FleetCenter. He spoke about voter disenfranchisement and the supposed lack of Republican compassion for black Americans.

"I'm not running away from being called liberal," Jackson said. "A Christian conservative is a contradiction in terms."

He told the audience members to keep active in the Democratic Party, but also to remain independent to assure their ability to make a difference.

"I have one foot inside the party and one foot in the progressive direction," he said. "You have to be close enough to influence the party and free enough to keep pushing it forward."
