In 2002, Senator John Kerry signed a letter to every legislator in the state of Massachusetts, urging them to vote "no" on a proposed amendment to the Massachusetts State Constitution that would have protected traditional marriage in the Bay State. 

But just last week, in the aftermath of an overwhelming victory for a similar amendment in Missouri, Senator Kerry flip-flopped, and told the Kansas City Star that he would have voted for that amendment.

It is fair to say that Senator Kerry was against such amendments before he was for them.

And the long view of Senator Kerry's record is clear:

He was one of only 16 senators to vote against the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act, publishing an article accusing defenders of traditional marriage of [and I quote] the "bigotry that peppered the discussion of interracial marriage a generation ago." 

This record of flip-flopping on one the central issues of campaign 2004 tells many voters all they need to know about John Kerry.

Voters who care about defending marriage will not find a friend in John Kerry.
