Gull Lake--Day 1

I am writing this note from my room at Gull Lake Bible Conference in Hickory Corners, Michigan. I can look out the window and see the blue waters of Gull Lake 30 feet away. A few years ago National Geographic named Gull Lake one of the most beautiful deep water lakes in America. It certainly lives up to its billing.

This is my third time to speak at Gull Lake. About five years ago I spoke here as part of Moody Week. Two years ago I was the sole speaker for a family Bible conference, which is what I'll be doing this week. I speak once today, three times tomorrow, once on Tuesday, three times on Wednesday, and twice on Thursday morning.

Upon my arrival late yesterday, I immediately noticed children everywhere. Lots of children and teenagers. That's very unusual since many Bible conferences tend to attract mostly senior citizens. I'm not sure how they've done it, but Gull Lake seems to have figured out the secret because we've got kids everywhere this week. That's speaks well for the leaders and their vision for the future.

Yesterday the Kalamazoo Gazette ran an article called "Vacations Without Dad." This summer Gull Lake has offered a free week at the conference center for the families of deployed military personnel. The military families are invited regardless of religious affiliation. Daniel Wallace, executive director of the conference center, said the idea came one day as he was praying for guidance from the Lord. Wallace, the son of a 20-year Army serviceman, said, "Who better to honor than those who are defending our country?" Seven military families attended Gull Lake (average cost: $1000 per family) free of charge July 2-8. Last night one of the women at the desk told me that one of those mothers trusted Christ as Savior that week. She had tears in her eyes as she reported the good news. This week at least one military family will be here.

God bless all the men and women serving in the Armed Forces. Watch over them, O Lord. God bless their families. And God bless Gull Lake for opening its doors on behalf of those who serve our country.

(On July 1, Harvest House released my newest book, The Healing Power of Forgiveness .)
