Riddle Me This

See if you can guess which controversial judicial nominee these affectionate "love taps from the Left" actually refer to. You'll be surprised...

"This is a man who has spent only a minimum of time in the public sector, and who lives in a village of 2000 people, almost all of whom are white, far from the crises of crime and drugs. Is he really equipped to deal with great national questions?"  NYT

"This nominee is, at best, very weird."  NPR

"Almost Neanderthal. A man whose constitutional views are based on the Framers 200 years ago, when blacks were slaves and women were the property of their husbands". NOW

"This nominee would be the fifth vote for outlawing abortion. We find him a devastating threat."  Fund For The Feminist Majority

"We are quite simply troubled about this nominee." The NAACP

Okay, which former judicial nominee do all these words refer to? John Roberts? No.  Clarence Thomas? Uh uh. Robert Bork, maybe? Nope. Antonin Scalia? Not even close.

No, this "troubling Neanderthal threat to minority rights, reproductive freedomk and the very Constitution itself" was none other than current Supreme Court Justice David Souter, nominated by Bush 41 in 1990. That's right, all these quotes are from the shrill throated lefties attacking him at that time.

Souter went on to become exactly the opposite of what they feared, and is today a more or less obedient bobble-head figure for the left as the Supremes happily legislate our future from the bench.

So what's this prove?

1. Stealth nominees (those with too little legal "time on" to determine their habits of decision) can indeed be surprises once they're approved. Better hope the vetting process on John Roberts was one in which they really dropped the pan and checked deep inside the engine. One more Souter can screw up our whole generation.

2. Liberals are always "on". They believe that even when you're in serious doubt, go ahead and attack, disbelieve, invent , discredit, obstruct, smear and accuse anyway. If you turn out to be right, you'll look smart. If you were wrong, they'll at least fear you a little more.

In light of number 2 above, do you really think that the current lull in the attack on John Roberts means the Dems have acceded his nomination? Come on now. You're forgetting Rule Number 1 of liberal attack politics, and that is that Rule number 2 always applies.
