A young lady came to see me recently because she is betwixt and between. After graduating with a degree from a Big Ten school, she doesn't know what to do next. Maybe she should move to New York where she has an non-paying internship. Maybe she should find a job in Chicago. Maybe she should spend a few months at a school for Christian discipleship. We talked through her options and nothing seemed absolutely clear. All her options were good but nothing seemed to stand out in her mind. She has a good job at the moment, though it's not the sort of thing she plans to do for the rest of her life.

So I told her what I occasionally tell people: When you need to know, you'll know. The reason you don't know is that you don't need to know now because if you needed to know, you would know now but since you don't know now, you must not need to know now because if you really, truly needed to know at this moment, you'd know. If God is God, that must be true.

She laughed and said, "I'm on a need-to-know basis."

Nicely put. And it describes all of us all the time. We're on a need-to-know basis with God. When my young friend needs to know, she'll know. True for her, true for me, true for all of us who wish we knew right now.
