Governor Davis' Emails Clarification

An email from Governor Gray Davis' office to clarify his endorsement...

Dear Eric,

I enjoyed being on your show this morning.  Per our conversation later in the day, I am writing to set the record straight:

1.       I do support the concept of redistricting reform; I believe judges, be they sitting or retired, are best suited to draw the congressional and state legislative lines.

2.       I was not specifically asked my position on Prop 74 and Prop 76.

The Governor has the right to put these initiatives before the people.  However, I oppose both of these measures.  The Teachers Tenure initiative addresses the wrong problem: more than 1/2 of California’s new teachers quit after 3-4 years, even though they have tenure because they find the job too demanding.  State policy should encourage good teachers to stay so most students have the benefit of a knowledgeable and experienced teacher.

I oppose the “Live Within Our Means” initiative because it undermines two earlier decisions voters made in passing (Prop 98 and Prop 42) which provide needed resources for schools and transportation.

Sincerely,

Governor Gray Davis
