YOUR DUTY TO ABORT: Is it just me or is there something more militant in the view of those pushing abortion on America now? Two items in print are discussing the issue and drawing some attention to an ugly idea. Society is systematically attempting to eliminate people with disabilities.
For now it has started in the womb. Soon it may resemble Nazi tactics, or more recently New Orleans tactics. Presently there are 215 cases under investigation in the possible execution of disabled and seriously ill persons in the lead up to landfall of hurricane Katrina.
A. Urti addresses the issue and describes the Amniocentesis which is the procedure most often used to determine potential disabilities in the unborn child - disabilities such as Down's Syndrome.
But last Tuesday Patricia Bauer writing in the Washington Post also brought up the matter. And the horror of even how her former doctor refers to the matter in such a cold reality sends chills down my spine.
And in smashing fashion Bauer nails the lid shut on whether or not she made the right decision in giving birth to her "Margaret".
Margaret is a person and a member of our family. She has my husband's eyes, my hair and my mother-in-law's sense of humor. We love and admire her because of who she is -- feisty and zesty and full of life -- not in spite of it. She enriches our lives. If we might not have chosen to welcome her into our family, given the choice, then that is a statement more about our ignorance than about her inherent worth.
She also ends with a zinger that is nearly undeniable...
This question is a small but nonetheless significant part of what's driving the abortion discussion in this country. I have to think that there are many pro-choicers who, while paying obeisance to the rights of people with disabilities, want at the same time to preserve their right to ensure that no one with disabilities will be born into their own families.
Today on the broadcast we will also address the issue of what happens if the doctors are wrong. A true story of heroic faith by a couple that decided. Listen in at 2:20pm EST we will also be taking calls on the matter - 800.345.WMCA
