ABC'S BIG TEN

Reporting from The Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour in Los Angeles, Mediaweek column Daily Programming Insider passes along the news that ABC is planning a mini-series about The Ten Commandments.

This epic two-part, four-hour miniseries will retell the story of Moses -- one of the most revered figures in world religions -- from his narrow escape from death as a child, to his emancipation of the Hebrew slaves and the renowned parting of the Red Sea.

Executive producer Robert Halmi, Sr. made it clear that this is not a remake of the movie: "This is my conception, my idea how to interpret the same words. There's a new generation who needs to know this, and there is new research that has been done that discovers new facts about the story. And so I wanted to keep this story alive. I wanted to talk to a new audience because I believe this story is extremely important. And I wanted to do it as a reality. My characters are real; the location is real. So I wanted to be more true to the story and to the characters as I think I saw it."

ABC has not confirmed a date, but the guess is that The Ten Commandments would air sometime around Easter.
