Olympics Salute US Athletes with "Freedom"

I watched the Winter Olympic Ceremonies from Italy last night on NBC; Channel 3 KCRA locally in Sacramento. My wife and I turned to each other during the introduction of the 'teams' (competing countries) and we asked, "what's with all of the American Disco/80's music?"

The only answer we could come up with...maybe it's the IOC's way of saluting the athletes, since most of them were born in the 80's.

Does anyone have a better answer? Why did Torino, Italy decide to use Disco/80's music for the accompaniment during the intros?

BTW, you had to smile when you heard the 'special musical salute' to the United State's Athletes when they were marching into the stadium? The musical selection was Aretha Franklin's "Freedom" for the 'red, white and blue'. I love the Italian people!
