The call comes in response to a threatened boycott of South Dakota by an abortion rights group.
The South Dakota legislature last week passed a bill banning all abortions in the state, unless the mother would die without one.
Backers of the bill not only expect a legal challenge, they want one. They see the legislation as a way to force the Supreme Court to re-examine its 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalized abortion.
The Women's Medical Fund of Madison, Wis., a group that helps poor women pay for their abortions, is urging its supporters and national feminist groups to join a travel boycott of South Dakota.
But to counter the proposed boycott, Pro-Life Wisconsin is asking families to travel to South Dakota -- "not just to show the state that we support this legislation, but so our supporters can see first hand a state full of citizens who respect life," said Marc Tuttle, communications director of Pro-Life Wisconsin.
"If anything, South Dakota's abortion ban is going to improve South Dakota's profile, not decrease it," Tuttle said. "Mt. Rushmore, the Badlands, the Black Hills and the other top tourist destinations in South Dakota will be seen as more family-friendly," he said.
Gov. Mike Rounds, a Republican, has indicated he is willing to sign the abortion ban.
While attending the National Governors Association meeting in Washington over the weekend, Gov. Rounds was quoted as saying that a number of other governors have expressed support for the South Dakota abortion ban -- and said they are considering similar legislation for their states.
