LAZY MINDS PRODUCE FOUL MOUTHS: My grandfather always used to tell me that the only reason people used profanity was because a lack of their own vocabulary. If he was right - then we are a nation that knows very few words - and most of them I can't put here.
I talked about this on the show today. I asked for my listeners to tell me how long it had been since hearing a profanity. I could trace the last profanity I heard to just after Hugh Hewitt and I had left Starbucks across the street from the Empire State Building today and were headed to the Salem studios to do an interview on his new book, PAINTING THE MAP RED. He had just finished breakfast stepped outside the door onto Fifth Ave. and an "F" bomb flew from a passerby.
Viviana from Queens called in and reported the last profanity she had heard was around 8:30am. And my faithful MuscleHead Elgin took home the prize of the day - as he taught Sunday School this past Sunday morning, some of the 15 kids in his Sunday school class used the "F" bomb to describe things to him and to each other. And he added that he had heard the same happen when they were with his pastor.
The disturbing thing about this new poll is that a majority of Americans USE the "F" bomb minimum of several times a year.
Nearly three-quarters of Americans questioned last week — 74 percent — said they encounter profanity in public frequently or occasionally, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll. Two-thirds said they think people swear more than they did 20 years ago. And as for, well, the gold standard of foul words, a healthy 64 percent said they use the F-word — ranging from several times a day (8 percent) to a few times a year (15 percent).
And while I believe that profanity is a sign of mental laziness and an unwillingness to learn more articulate vocabulary to properly express frustration, our founding fathers took a more pronounced view.
"Foolish & wicked cursing, is so low and so mean - every person of sense and character must detest and despise it." ~George Washington
