FENCES, BARRIERS, AND DEPORTATION: With two wins on the enforcement side of the debate yesterday - and by overwhelming margins we might add - it looks like the Senate Bill will be stronger than originally thought. I know it's not like me to be optimistic on this - but consider this...
Monday night I was quick to say that there are two things that WILL NOT happen in the Border Security debate.
1. There will not be Mass Amnesty for the 20 million Illegal Aliens who are here.
2. There will also not be Mass Deportation for 20 million Illegals either.
So what that leaves us with is a tennis match. Who will get the chance to stay will be opposed by - who has to go home. But coming out of the President's speech on Monday night the volleys have already begun.
Tuesday those of us who believe in enforcement took a hit, the Senate made the mistake of killing an amendment that would allow the nation to deal with the matter of stricty security first by a vote of 55 to 40.
But on Wednesday enforcement won twice. Deportation of illegal felons, or illegals who have committed three misdemeanors won massive support. And that was followed by a bigger win which essentially covers 800+ miles of the 2000 mile border with a fence/barriers that was approved 83 to 16. And as VP Cheney pointed out - fences work. So far small sections of fences have been effective south of San Diego. So if stretches of 32 miles has an effective result - 800+ should do even better. I personally would still like to see the complete 2000 mile stretch be covered. But 800 is closer to that than 32.
Look for the back and forth to continue - but these measures are certainly better than simply a "guest worker" bill - which until Senator Jeff Sessions came along looked like what we would end up with.
