House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, (D-NV) recently presented their message of rejuvenated Democratic leadership, boldly calling their plan the "New Direction for America." What they didn't tell you is that Howard Dean is behind the wheel. You remember Howard, don't you? If it's been a while since you had Dean on your mind, here's a quick refresher course of the "Mouth that roars":
* The doctor once said that Osama bin Laden should be presumed innocent and receive a fair trial if captured.
* He called Hamas terrorists "soldiers."
* "If Bill Clinton could be the first black president, I can be the first gay president," Dean once said in one of his more amusing rhetorical rantings.
But after these forgotten bits of Deanism, he's still at it.
Speaking before a religious conference in D.C. a few weeks back, Dean tried to convert the audience to the doctrine of liberalism -- 1960s liberalism. Remember those good old days...urban riots, political assassinations, peaceniks versus G.I.s returning from Vietnam, LBJ's "Great Society" handouts, potheads, hippies, and yippies? Howard remembers the '60s as a time when "everybody [was] in it together," sort of a pre-"It takes a village" approach.
But after a few minutes of nostalgia, Dean, realizing it or not, began to exhort what happens when Democrats hold office and spend taxpayers' money like, well...like Democrats!
* "We made some mistakes in the '60s," he admitted.
* "...we did give things away for free, and that's a huge mistake
* "If you look at how we did public housing, we essentially created ghettoes for poor people."
So how will Howard and his band of spenders fix those liberal mistakes of the '60s?
* By "...making sure everybody in America has health insurance just like 36 other countries in the world."
* By rais[ing] the minimum wage until we have a living wage in this country."
* By explaining that "you need the opportunity to work hard, and that means some level of support from government..."
* By mentioning "tax fairness."
Howard and the Democrats want to take you back to the nostalgic '60s all right, but on your dime, folks. Lots of dimes.
"We have to make sure that we don't make the same mistakes," admitted the former Vermont governor in conclusion. For the first time in my life, I find myself agreeing with Howard Dean. He's right. We can't make the same mistakes that this country made in the 1960s.
Vote Conservative Republican.
