I've started an interesting dialogue on Crosswalk today.
It will become a topic tonight on the show. To prepare for the discussion, and my positions, read the article by Michael Craven (The Center for Christ and Culture) entitled, "Career vs. Family: Is There a Choice?".
We'll discuss this epidemic tonight starting at 5PM on KFIA in Sacramento, and KFAX in San Francisco.
Here are my critical points thus far:
1. If the premise is; that Christian's can change this ideal within America's economical greed, I disagree. Desire to make a sacrifice for family, great. But it will not change America's economical growth...we will be replaced in the marketplace by more secular individuals.
2. Biblical description of male versus female in roles (best case). Isn't the covering expected to provide, and be removed more often than the female? This might remove some guilt for father's who have determined hearts to provide for their families.
3. What about the Disciples? They left wives, children, careers and home to follow Jesus. I know the Gospel doesn't equate corporate America, but their 'leaving the family and children' does. What of military personnel, medical field, missionaries? Consider the Reverend Billy Graham (ask Franklin how often his dad was home.)?
4. I agree, there needs to be a moral, Christian filter upon corporate America and true, free capitalism. I'm a BIG supporter of capitalism, but I'm sorry that consumerism has created the bondage of greed.
5. The Katie example is nice, but has a few holes. She has a Nanny to take care of her kids for 18 hours a day. That she decided to not go to Iraq was self preservation, not motherly care.
