On Monday, when the California State Assembly convenes for a one-day organizational meeting, homosexual activist Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) will reintroduce his bill, which is sure to become California''s biggest legislative battle of 2007, said conservative activist Randy Thomasson, president of Campaign for Children and Families.
"As Californians prepare to celebrate Christmas, the Democrats have declared war upon marriage between a man and a woman," said Thomasson.
"The California Constitution specifically prohibits the Legislature from repealing voter-approved initiatives. This bill should be vetoed by Arnold Schwarzenegger on the same grounds as he vetoed it last year -- because the people have already voted to keep marriage between a man and a woman, just as God created it," Thomasson said.
A second bill being introduced on Monday would give all unmarried heterosexual couples the right to register as domestic partners.
State Sen. Carole Migden (D-San Francisco) said her bill reflects the fact that so many children are being born to unmarried couples.
"This is a very practical expansion that absolutely reflects the new family unit today," the San Francisco Chronicle quoted Migden as saying. "We're trying to provide the proper benefits for the families that exist today."
But conservatives such as Thomasson described Migden's bill as an attempt to further dilute the institution of marriage.
