Christmas outreaches in Costa Rica show children the real meaning of the holiday, Latin American Mission reports. Many missionaries say they find that during the special season many nonbelievers are more open to the gospel and are appreciative of any practical help.

...The youth of a local church reached out to poor families in their community, says LAM's Lilian Solt. The mother of each family received a basket of bread and also some rare "goodies," such as apples, grapes, and cereal, Solt said. Every child was given a new outfit, a pair of shoes, and a small toy. Similar outreaches in past years have brought members of several families to come to know Christ, she said.

...A cooking ministry in another community opens hearts to the gospel, says LAM's Nancy Mauger. Each Christmas, her neighbors look forward to a special holiday event she hosts. "I have a party where I have lots of games, then we have a meal. I also share with them some kind of devotional about the meaning of Christmas. This year I talked about angels and how they came to announce the birth of the Savior," Mauger said. Many of the people who attended were receptive to the gospel message, she said.
