POINT OF IMPACT: Mel Gibson, born in the United States and raised in Australia, originally dreamed of becoming a journalist or a chef, but he found himself in drama school after his sister applied for him. His big break came in the form of post-apocalyptic character Mad Max. The film grossed more than any other Australian movie before it and led to two sequels. From there, movies like Gallipoli, Mrs. Soffel, and The Year of Living Dangerously showcased his talent and charm. After starring in Hamlet, Maverick, and Lethal Weapon, Gibson won Best Director and Best Picture Oscars for Braveheart. But ultimately, he's proved more than just a handsome face (People magazine named him its first "Sexiest Man Alive"). Since marrying Robyn Moore in 1980, Gibson has set a new standard in Hollywood for "success" by investing the majority of his time in the lives of his seven children. Their large but close family attends a Catholic church in Southern California.
