The New Coke gaffe as you call it turned out to be one of the biggest marketing successes in Advertising history.

Its true that Coca-Cola was loosing ground to pepsi and a decision was made to change the formula. But look at all the free advertising they got. NBC news broke into regular programming to report that Coke Classic was coming back.
Coca-Cola had an 18 point share swing over pepsi, and its been there ever since.
Pepsi has never recovered.
You call it a gaffe? Think about this, how did Coca-Cola come out with the Coca-Cola Classic campaign so quickly. They spent $6 million on promoting new Coke, and $186 million in promoting Coca-Cola Classic. I think this was a genius marketing program.
