Let me offer some calm reasoning to the frenzy surrounding the "Rick Warren Controversy".
Why are conservative Christian's attacking Rick Warren, over his invite of US Senator Barak Obama to speak at Saddleback Church for a conference surrounding HIV/Aids this Friday?
1. Easy - Standing against the murder of created life in the womb is easy. The church has taken the lead on this for years, and 'righteously so'. Standing against the spread of HIV/Aids is much harder. This 'satanic murderer' is seen through the hue of homosexual lifestyles, ideology and immoral practices. The church has 'never' taken great interest in this pandemic. It is much easier (cleaner) to deal with heterosexual sins versus homosexual sins, and abortion versus HIV/Aids. Rick Warren is swimming in uncharted waters.
2. Politics - Senator Barak Obama (D - Illinois) is very "popular"; He's seen as a very solid threat to any Republican candidate and core conservative ideals. Inviting Senator Obama to a conservative, Christian, Mega (Giga) church is risky behavior for future political strategy. The chances that an already popular Senator Obama might pick up a few hundred votes for the next Presidential race is very real. For those who are pro-life, many see this as a detriment to future efforts to reverse 'Roe v. Wade' with the support of the Executive Office and our government.
3.Condoms - Senator Barak Obama will endorse the distribution of condoms to Africa, to reduce the spread of HIV/Aids. Considering that Rick and Kay Warren already support this endeavor, Obama's mention of this will be no surprise or shock to the attendees of the church, nor the conference. Would we prefer someone use a condom rather than spread of HIV? Moreover, would be prefer that abstinence education be offered to Africa, so that everyone would wait to have sex until they are married, so we could stop the spread of HIV? Which one is an moral absolute, which one is currently feasible for Africa? This is the running question.
4. Money - Rick Warren has a big church, and he is a rich man. What is not reported; Rick and Kay Warren have contributed all proceeds from the materials of the "Purpose Driven Life" to their HIV/Aids efforts. Charging $75 a ticket for attendees to see and hear Senator Barak Obama is not a Rick Warren, Saddleback money maker. There is some jealously in the mix here too. Warren is a celebrity, as much as he is a minister. This always breeds some contempt. We are all still humans, and easy to grasp our fleshy pride and ego.
5. Mission - Rick has a very different mission. He serves in a very different part of the body. He is determined to reach the marketplace (the leper), the culture and the world through more issues than just traditional 'church issue'.
Has it caused him some pain, lead to a few errors and missteps - Yes!
Will it lead to more mistakes and pain - Yes!
Is he just a man, trying his best to do what he believes the Lord is leading him to do - Yes!
Will he be found guilty of taking his talents and digging a hole in the backyard, to bury the blessings so as to not lose them, save face, and to never face the risk of multiplying them in the marketplace - No!
In conclusion: I can't bring myself to attack Rick Warren 'at this time'. I think the church needs more 'risk takers', versus 'political calculators'. Where did Jesus ever turn away the "do gooders"?
