Meteorites and the Craters of Life
April Motl is a pastor’s wife who loves to laugh, loves her man, loves to talk on the phone entirely too long and most of all, loves her Lord. Collaborating with the joint efforts of her husband Eric, the two of them share a ministry dedicated to bringing God’s Word into the everyday lives of married couples, men and women. April writes and teaches for women. When she’s not tapping away at the computer writing, or trying to catch up with the laundry and dishes, she is busy serving as a pastor’s wife. April has been privileged through her own church and ministry outside her local body to share God's Word with women ranging in ages and stages, across denominations, and walks of life. Her passion is to bring God's liberating truth to His Beloved. She teaches God's Word with real life illustrations, humor and practical application. April is a graduate from Southern California Seminary (MRS) and has written for Just Between Us Magazine, Dayspring's (In)courage, and The Secret Place and also writes regularly for crosswalk.com. While the sun was rising over Russia this morning, and my hubby and I were getting ready for bed, a meteorite exploded over Chelyabinsk. Apparently, Russian drivers all have cameras attached to their cars, so the early morning drivers caught the footage from all over the vicinity.
I’d never seen footage of a meteorite like it... the noise, the blinding light, the sounds of breaking glass and explosion everywhere. Officials are reporting it as a somewhat smaller meteor (as of just 30 minutes after it hit -- update: it has been reported as "significant" and there have been over 100 injuries reported. Though it is still not classified as a large meteor). My husband turned to me and said, “If that was a small one, a medium sized one would make you think it was the end of the world!”
I jumped online and began looking at footage along with him. I came across an article about a huge cache of diamonds that was created by a meteorite, but kept secret for years.
Interesting, isn’t it, that something that could feel like the end of the world, might actually be a source of treasure, wealth and richness. At least, that is God’s promise to us if we let Him have the big hole that just got blasted into our lives like a meteor.
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 NIV
For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God. 2 Corinthians 1:20 NIV
But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. 2 Corinthians 2:14
There’s stuff in all of our lives individually and as a couple that feels like a giant hole caused by some flying, burning, unexpected collision with life. Joseph was tossed into a well, sold into slavery, thrown in prison, forgotten, and all the while kept his faith in God’s goodness. Abraham and Sarah struggled with the emptiness they felt over not having children while wandering, homeless in the desert. David was forced to live in caves and exile with his family for years until God called him home to his throne. God’s people all experience emotional and spiritual meteorites and those are the places He creates diamonds, if we let Him.
Today’s February Freebie is a set of Scripture cards for you to put up as reminders of God’s promise and His faithfulness. Use them to encourage your spouse if you two are going through a valley, or feel like you’ve been hit by a meteorite in your own way. Pray God’s promises together before you start your day, or before you go to sleep. Whatever you do, talk through the places that feel like craters and invite God into the center of the conversation. I’m praying for your “craters,” whatever they may be.
