It looks like Beam's student made a good point. I suspect, as does Bill O'Reilly, that Obama originally joined Trinity United Church of Christ because its Afrocentricity gave him a point of reference for what it meant to be black. Although he is of African descent, Obama was essentially raised in either a white culture or a Muslim one. As a result, although he would look like a typical black male, he had few of the life experiences which are common for that demographic. Joining TUCC would be one way of developing connections in the black community in Chicago.

Another factor might be the immense social ministries program that Trinity supports. Given Obama's apparent interest in social ministry, it would seem logical that he would go to a church that shares his interest in social ministry. I have not heard either an in-depth discussion with Obama regarding his relationship to TUCC or a response from TUCC to this issue. Both would be nice for a fuller picture of this situation.
