I can smell it now. The smell of fresh cut grass lingers in the air. The smell of popcorn wafts down the aisle. Then the aroma of hot dogs and pretzels float past. Even the smell of the freshly oiled leather brings back fond memories.

Then there are the sounds. The crack of the bat, the smack of the ball into the glove, even the sound of a foot hitting first base, all remind us that spring is finally here.

As a kid, I lived for spring. Winter was just a hiatus, a time of rest before the important stuff got going again. Some kids were counting the days until school was out; I was counting days until baseball season started.

Well, it’s that time of the year again. The boys of spring have returned, the scandals of winter are gone, and it’s time to “PLAY BALL!” And, I couldn’t be happier.

I don’t know what this new season will bring. I don’t know who the players will be in the future. I don’t know what we’re going to have to do to turn things around.

But there are some things I do know:

I KNOW that God is sovereign and that things are not beyond His control.

I KNOW that God is all-knowing and that nothing escapes His attention.

I KNOW that God loves His church and that He hasn’t forgotten us.

I KNOW that God will be glorified in all things.

I KNOW that God will never let us down.

I KNOW that God is good and His plans for us are, too.

And finally, I KNOW that God wins in the end.

You see, in many ways our spiritual lives are like baseball. Our greatest days are not behind us but in the season ahead. God has “‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you,’ declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Let’s seek God. Let’s trust God. Let’s give God the glory.
