Fox News: Ads proclaiming, "Why believe in a god? Just
be good for goodness' sake," will appear on Washington, D.C.,
buses starting next week and running through December. The American Humanist
Association unveiled the provocative $40,000 holiday ad campaign Tuesday. In
lifting lyrics from "Santa Claus is Coming to Town," the
Washington-based group is wading into what has become a perennial debate over
commercialism, religion in the public square and the meaning of Christmas.
Questions:
Is it rational to believe in God?
Can we philosophically affirm being good simply for the sake
of being good?
If there's no God, what's the point of being good? If there was no God to give us a moral compass, who's to say what's right or wrong? If we aren't working for an eternal reward or have no hope of a better future why work to change the present and make it better? Without God there's no hope and the world does not make sense. Creation cries out that there's a God and scientists are finding out daily the extreme complexity of the world around us, making it harder and harder to deny the presence of something far greater than us. Through Christ we not only have the hope of an eternal future but we can find forgiveness, peace, joy, hope. Christ is the only one who can bring peace to a guilty soul. We are starting to see what the world could be like when people abandon what should be their first love.
