Appreciating Your Pastor

Pastor Appreciation Month does give me the opportunity to say a few things about how to appreciate your pastor in a way that will be meaningful for them. And it doesn’t involve what you might think. Most aren’t hoping to be invited over for a dinner, or having their picture put up in a hallway with candles lit on either side in memoriam.

Future Shock

I was recently asked four compelling questions by Outreach magazine related to the future of the church. They were specific, and as a result, forced me to galvanize quite a bit of "wide" thinking into a concise format.

Films for Thought

We have witnessed a cultural revolution over the last 20 years. We have moved, rather decisively, to a visually-based world. The most formative influences are not books, theater, or even music. They are films.

Meet the Nones

Now that the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life has documented the "nones" are the fastest-growing and now second-largest religious constituency in the United States, constituting one of every five Americans, who are they?

The Rise of the Nones and the Waking of the Ents

There is a desperately needed wake-up call that American Christianity needs. A wake-up call to shake us from the trivial and divisive, the mundane and the meaningless, the inane and the banal.

Grace and Truth

It’s common to find people and groups separating grace and truth, but it’s quite clear that Jesus came bringing both. In fact, keeping them together is one of the more important exercises for Christian life and thought. As Henry Cloud has written, truth without grace is just judgment. Conversely, grace without truth is license.

Five Reflections on Twenty Years

Twenty years ago I planted a church called Mecklenburg Community Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Besides becoming a Christ-follower, and then marrying my wife and being graced with four incredible children, it has proven to be the defining act of my life.

'Freedom of' or 'Freedom from'?

What is now upon us is the sense that our constitution does not simply call for the freedom of religion, but the freedom from it. In other words, that we must sanitize any and all aspects of religion from public life.

The Top Ten Books

I'd like your help. Our new bookstore, The Grounds, asked me for the top ten books I would recommend that everyone read. Whether they are simply new to the faith, or just hungry to grow, what would those ten be?

Preparing for Jesus' Next Lover

Ancient manuscripts seem to be the sweet spot, a la Dan Brown and The Da Vinci Code, for sensationalism. Anything "old" that surfaces that even hints at a variant account of the biblical materials is thrown into the news cycle with breathless drama.

The Authority of the Christian Faith

Today, we have made personal experience everything. What we think and feel, what we emote and choose, is placed above the stated orthodoxy of the community of faith of which we are a part.

Pastoral Plagiarism

Someone brought something to my attention recently. A young woman on our staff came across a talk, given by a pastor, on a church’s website. It was my talk.

The Slippery Slope Emerges

The idea is a simple one: if you take one step on to a slippery slope, you may find yourself sliding all the way down the hill. Culturally, it means that if you rationalize doing something from a particular philosophy or set of values, you may want to consider how that same rationale might apply to other, less popular, concerns.

Four Questions

During a jog on our annual study break, I was praying to God for self-evaluation; how I could improve, do better, go to another level in my life and ministry. As I continued down the trail, four questions formed in my mind that penetrated to the heart of not just improvement, but the kind of ruthless self-assessment that leads to substantive life change.

You and Your Church

Let’s talk instead about what any single individual person, in any particular church, can do to help their church reach its full redemptive potential. In other words, let’s go after the lowest-hanging solution-oriented fruit.

Memo to CNN and Bill Nye

CNN recently ran an article about the YouTube slam on creationism, "Creationism Is Not Appropriate for Children," by Bill Nye -- also known as TV’s "Bill Nye the Science Guy." I felt it worthwhile to address this.

The Christian and Politics

With the Republican National Convention in Tampa this week, and the DNC coming next week to my home city (Charlotte), it seemed a good time to talk about the Christian and politics.

Marriage Under Fire

There’s an old line that goes, "It’s like saying you want to marry someone, but still date around." Who would think of marrying someone, and then act as if it was okay to date? It was an easy point to get. Not anymore.

Reaching Out to the Unchurched

I want to make sure that churches understand their models. And specifically, that if you want to be a church for the unchurched, you understand what that means.
