Recently I was asked by a young man who lives in a distant land for some help in preparing five messages for a missions conference. He was asked to start with Job 42:2, "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.” He wanted to know how I would arrange things in those five sermons. Here is my answer to him:

I am happy to hear about the wonderful opportunity God has given you to speak at the missions conference. If I had five messages to give, starting with Job 42:2, I would arrange them this way:

The sovereignty of God over all the affairs of men.
The wrath of God because of the sinfulness of men.
The grace of God reaching out to a dying world.
The call of God to preach the Gospel as the means of salvation.
The power of God to save those who believe.

It’s all about God. It’s not about us and it’s not about the lost. If you focus on us or on the lost, you lose a focus on God. The gospel is the gospel of God! It’s his love that reaches out to a rebel planet.

When you preach, start and end with God. Show how we fit into his divine plan. Preach a big God, a mighty God, a vast God, whose plan spans the ages, whose gospel saves all who believe, and whose call compels us to go to the lost with the Good News of Jesus.

God bless you as you inspire the church with a God-centered view of world missions.
