19:50 For the Lord had said he could have any town he wanted. He chose Timnath-serah in the hill country of Ephraim. He rebuilt the town and lived there. Since Joshua was a Christ-type, I was curious about this town (if there was anything significant), so I looked it up. The name "Timnath-serah" means "portion of the sun" or "abundant portion." Originally, the town's name was "Timnath-Heres," but many scholars believe it was changed deliberately to "serah" because "Heres" had to do with the idolatry of sun worship. Here's what one responder, Lieut. Col. Coner, said on Bible.net about the town:
"Of all sites I have seen, none is so striking as that of Joshua's home, surrounded as it is with deep valleys and wild, rugged hills. Opposite the town is a hill, on the northern side of which there are many excavated sepulchers (like tombs). Among these is the supposed tomb of Joshua, which is said to be 'the most striking monument in the country.'"
19: 30-34 As a little reminder from our earlier studies, remember that a king who rode a donkey came in peace, whereas a king who rode a horse came for war. Jews were waiting for a king on a horse—but that comes later. First our King had to make this ride on a donkey to Jerusalem to make our peace with God (vs. 38). Only then could he come to make war later with our enemies.
I looked, and behold, a white horse, and he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer. Revelation 6:2
And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war. His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself. He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, "KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." Revelation 19:11-16
19:38 "Blessings on the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in highest heaven!" (from Psalm 118:26)
Don't miss the significance here! All Jesus' followers are singing in this great procession and celebration. What are they singing? Psalm 118! This is part of the "Great Hallel" ("Hallel" means "praise") which was recited on Jewish Feasts for praise and thanksgiving (Wikipedia). Also, according to Ryrie, this particular Psalm was "sung by worshipers in procession to the Temple. The Psalm contains and acclamation of praise, an acknowledgement of past distress, petition, and deliverance by God, and an anticipation of the future day when the Foundation Stone (Yeshua) will bring salvation." Read more of this Psalm 118 carefully to see what exactly these people were singing as they accompanied Jesus on His way to Jerusalem to die:
22 The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief corner stone.
23 This is the LORD'S doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
24 This is the day which the LORD has made;
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
25 O LORD, do save, we beseech You;
O LORD, we beseech You, do send prosperity!
26 Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the LORD;
We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.
27 The LORD is God, and He has given us light;
Bind the festival sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.
28 You are my God, and I give thanks to You;
You are my God, I extol You.
29 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good;
Is that not enough to bring tears to your eyes, when you realize how this beautiful story, anticipated for 1,500 years, was not being played out before their very eyes? The only problem is, I don't think they understood even at this point what they were singing "Bind the festival sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar," and what was about to happen to Jesus. I think all their hopes were dashed when He was turned over to be killed, and that is what made them not believe. They didn't understand what He had to do, or what He had been telling them all along. He came to conquer the spiritual Kingdom first! He will come to conquer the phyical Kingdom later.
19:41-44 This is a prophecy about what was to befall Jerusalem in 70 A.D. when the terrible siege and destruction of the Temple would take place. It sounds as if Jesus is saying none of that would have had to happen if the Jews had believed in Him. I have heard some people say that Jesus would have established His kingdom physically had the Jews believed, but since they didn't, He delayed and opened the opportunity for the Gentiles to believe (the Church age for the past 2,000 years).
Paul's comments in Romans 11:25-32 go perfectly with this passage in Luke:
For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery--so that you will not be wise in your own estimation--that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in; 26 and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE
DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB."
27 "THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS." 28 From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God's [election] they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; 29
for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. 30 For just as
you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because
of their disobedience, 31 so these also now have been disobedient, that
because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. 32 For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all. (NASB)
19:45 Then Jesus entered the Temple and began to drive out the people selling animals for sacrifices. Notice it is just before the Passover and Jesus is getting rid of the "leaven" or yeast in the "house." Remember from our Jewish studies that the Israelites were commanded to clean the leaven out of their homes before the Passover, the leaven being the sin.
