No one can make a grown man cry with humble appreciation like a mom.

Take Kevin Durant, the 25-year-old winner of the 2014 NBA Most Valuable Player award. During his emotional speech that took place just in time for Mother’s Day, Durant reflected back on the uphill road his single mother, Wanda Pratt, walked with her two young sons.

From finding a way to make ends meet to cheering him on at his basketball games growing up, Durant’s tears are a testament to his mother’s powerful impact on his life. Durant sums it up simply, telling his mom, “I don’t think you know what you did.”

As Durant speaks, you can see how deeply his words touch his mother’s heart.

Watching Durant address his mom during that speech is like watching an intimate moment between a mother and son. No one else seems to be there. You see how those years of love and sacrifices worked together to shape this young man’s heart.

It’s a beautiful thing to behold. You can watch Durant thank his mom starting at the 2:55 mark.

If there’s one thing Wanda Pratt’s example shows us is that motherhood is not easy. Moms face both joys and challenges as they raise their kids. In our two-part broadcast yesterday and today we explore how moms can “Enjoy the Ups and Downs of Motherhood” in their own lives.

If you’re a mom reading today’s blog post – thank you for all you do to raise the next generation well. Thank you for your sacrifices, love and hard work. Know your work – even the little things you think no one is aware of – are being seen by your Heavenly Father. When you serve your children, it is God Himself you honor.

That example will impact on your kids deeply. That’s why Durant ended his speech with these words: “We weren’t supposed to be here. You made us believe. You kept us off the street… You sacrificed for us. You’re the real MVP.”

Happy Mother’s Day, Moms!

You can still catch “Irreplaceable” during its nationwide encore presentation on Thursday, May 15!
