The 12 million viewers who tuned into this week’s Duck Dynasty season premiere, got more than laughs – they got a lesson in true love and commitment.

In the episode, Phil and Kay, the Robertson clan’s patriarch and matriarch, finally had the wedding ceremony they missed out on when they were married almost 50 years ago. While the episode had its expected hijinks and redneck jokes, the wedding ceremony itself was heartfelt.

To be sure, Phil and Kay aren’t your typical Hollywood characters, so they make for unconventional centerpieces of a high-rating TV show’s main love story… and yet they are. That the storyline works shows, I think, that our hookup culture yearns to see a love that is committed, faithful and sincere.

Those were exactly the values that permeated the words Phil and Kay shared with each other during the ceremony.

“From the time I was 14 years old, I loved you,” said Miss Kay. “We’ve been through some good times, and some hard times. I loved you when we were poor, and you were not so nice. Now you’re really nice and kind. And all I can say about that is – I’m not going anywhere. I will love you forever.”

“Let’s see, Miss Kay,” responded Phil in his unique and quirky style. “We’ve been running together since we were teenagers. The old blue Chevrolet, Si in the back. You have cooked me many a good meal. From your loins came four healthy, godly men. You are my best friend and I love you dearly, and I’m going to be with you for the long haul, until they put me in the ground. Good?”

“Perfect,” answered Miss Kay, with love in her eyes.
