Your resentments, up in smoke

This is the church I attend. It's from the Early American Extremely Cute school of church architecture.

Every time I'm there I wonder what time the model train will pass by. It makes me feel two inches tall. Kind of fun.

Anyway, at church two Sundays back we did this thing, where everybody wrote down on a piece of paper a resentment they’d like to be rid of. We all then deposited our resentments into wooden box, which was then drilled shut.

As part of our sunrise service this Easter morning we’re going to build a fire beside the church, say a prayer, and burn that box. The idea is that our resentments will thusly be removed from us in the crucible of the glorious return of Jesus Christ.

Pretty cool bit of 3-D symbolism, right?

So at some point this Easter morning I’ll be standing around a fire as it consumes a bunch of people’s resentments. If you would like to add to that fire a resentment of your own, either leave your resentment in the comments section below, or email it to me at john@johnshore.com. I’ll transfer whatever you write onto a piece of paper, and this Easter morning see that your resentment rises up in smoke toward heaven.

Because of the great number of (heartbreaking) resentments I have already received (many of which you can read here), our pastor has said he will be honored to, on Easter morning, drill a slot into the box, into which I will place whatever you send me.

"I'll use a refrigerator box if that's what it takes," he said. "But let's get those resentments burned up!"

Amen to that. I'll be watching for whatever you send. God bless.
