Your New Year’s Eve Options

I know Christmas is not even over yet, but I’m already thinking about New Year’s Eve next week (!) and all of your options.

You may have been invited to a party or two at friends’ homes to celebrate.  Or maybe you’re going out to a fancy shindig at some swanky restaurant, club or hotel.  Or perhaps you’re planning on going it solo and ringing in the New Year in the comfort of your very own living room.

None of these sound good or doable?  Then let me recommend some options. ...

If you live in Nashville, Tenn., there’s a good reason to pack up the family and go out:  B. Haley’s “New Year’s Eve Bash.”  It’s the brainchild of B. Haley, the drummer for tobyMac and founder of TooLove, Inc., and it’s his first-ever bash.  Held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center (Delta Ballroom), the festivities will begin at 9:30 p.m., on December 31, 2008, and will include live music, entertainment, food and nonalcoholic beverages.  Among others, performers will include Superchick, Ayiesha Woods and Shonlock.

’TooLove Inc. New Year’s Eve Bash’ will bring thousands of Christians together to welcome 2009 in an exciting atmosphere,” says Haley.  “Until now there has been a lack of options on New Year’s Eve and many Christians either visit and feel uncomfortable at the alcohol-fueled clubs or choose to attend the smaller events at their own churches.  At ‘New Year’s Eve Bash,’ everyone will have fun and nobody will be tempted to compromise their beliefs.”

Those of you not living in or visiting Music City, U.S.A. this holiday season don’t need to feel left out, though.  There are some other “live” music options for you, too.  All airing on network TV (some pre-recorded), but options nonetheless.

On ABC, Ryan Seacrest will host “Dick Clark’s Primetime New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2009” (if they fit one more person's name in that title, I will stand amazed).  Scheduled performers will include Taylor Swift, Lionel Richie, will.i.am and the Pussycat Dolls.

A few channels away, NBC will air “New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly.”  Expect to see T.I., Little John and Katy Perry providing some musical entertainment.

And then over on FOX, “New Year’s Eve Live” will be hosted by Spike Feresten and Mark Thompson from Las Vegas and will feature music from David Cook, Daughtry, Scott Weiland and a stunt by Robbie Knievel (?).  Strange, but true.  Check your local listings for air times for all of these specials.

If you’re not into the music (or anything Knievel), then you could celebrate 2009 by going out to the movies.  Here are some recent theatrical releases that might interest you:

Bedtime Stories

Marley & Me

The Tale of Despereaux

Yes Man

Or, if you’d rather keep it really chill and mellow, then try curling up in your favorite chair and reading a good book.  Some of Christianbook.com’s current bestsellers include:

Know Your Bible:  All 66 Books Explained and Applied
by George Knight

The Shack
by William P. Young

The Love Dare
by Stephen Kendrick & Alex Kendrick

Have a New Kid by Friday
by Dr. Kevin Leman

What in the World Is Going on?  10 Prophetic Clues You Cannot Afford to Ignore

Finally, if reading’s not your thing and you don’t want to get out and about, there are several new DVDs that might suit your viewing fancy:

Burn After Reading

Ghost Town

Mamma Mia!

The Mummy:  Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Whatever your choices end up being this New Year’s Eve, remember to choose wisely, keep it safe and be expectant for the good things God is going to do in 2009!
