7 of 10 Deadliest Days for Teen Drivers in Summer

I recently posted that the 100 deadliest days for teen drivers fall between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Now, a new analysis from AAA identifies the top 10 deadliest days for teen drivers, of which 7 are during summer. Not sure exactly what parents should do with this new information, other than to serve as a reminder that driving dangers increase around holidays, proms, and graduation.

Not surprisingly, with school out, summer is the deadliest time of year for teen drivers and passengers, according to an analysis of crash data completed by AAA.

The 10 deadliest days for teen drivers and passengers: January 21, May 20, May 26, June 10, July 2, July 4, July 9, July 15, July 23, and November 11.

Some of the days correspond with activities such as prom, graduations, and the Fourth of July holiday, the AAA said.

“Parents need to pay attention,” said Marie Dodds, spokeswoman for AAA Oregon/Idaho. “They can play a critical role in keeping their teens safe behind the wheel, especially during these high-risk months. ... There is no summer break from safety.”

According to AAA, more than 7,300 teen drivers and passengers ages 13 to 19 died in traffic crashes between the Memorial Day and Labor Day holidays from 2005 to 2009.

What’s more, an average of 422 teens die in traffic crashes during the summer months, compared to a monthly average of 363 teen deaths during other months.
