Teen Survey Reveals Drug-Infected Schools

According to the National Survey of American Attitudes on Substance Abuse XVII: Teens, conducted by The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA), nearly nine out of 10 (86 percent) high school students say that some classmates are drugging, drinking and smoking during the school day. It's the sixth straight year that 60 percent of high school students said that they attend a drug-infected school, where drugs are used, kept, or sold on school grounds. These students report that about 17 percent of their classmates are involved in these on campus behaviors.

The survey also revealed that 44 percent of high school students know another student who sells drugs at their school. Asked what drugs students sell on school grounds, 91 percent said marijuana, 24 percent said prescription drugs, 9 percent said cocaine, and 7 percent said ecstasy.

Of the students surveyed, 52 percent reported that there is a place on schoool grounds or near school where students go to get high during the school day. Thirty-six percent of high school students said it is easy for classmates to use drugs, drink or smoke during the school day without getting caught.
