More than four in 10 teenage schoolgirls in England have experienced sexual coercion, a survey showed on Wednesday, sparking calls for urgent action from children's charity NSPCC.

The study also found that almost 40 percent of boys aged 14-17 said they regularly watched poronography, and about a fifth strongly agreed with statements such as "It is sometimes acceptable for a man to hit a woman if she has been unfaithful" and "Women lead men on sexually and then complain about the attention they get".

"The levels of victimisation revealed by this research shows action is urgently needed by the government to make updated sex and relationship education a statutory right for every child and young person," said Claire Lilley of children's charity NSPCC, one of the bodies behind the study.

In England the girls surveyed were aged 13-17, and most who had experienced sexual coercion were pressured to have sex or engage in other sexual activity, but some cases included rape.

Researchers from the universities of Bristol and Central Lancashire surveyed attitudes towards sex among 1,001 young people in England between 2013 and 2015, part of a wider European Commission-backed study that also encompassed Norway, Italy, Bulgaria and Cyprus.

England was found to have the highest rate of children exchanging sexual images and messages, with 44 percent of girls and just under a third of boys saying they had sent them to a boyfriend or girlfriend.
