Day 8 - For Our Children

Few things can make my knees hit the floor in prayer quicker than my children.

Who among us is prepared for the crazy love we feel for the little critters?

I remember our first night at home with our firstborn. My husband and I sat on the edge of our bed and stared in awe at her all swaddled in her bassinet. That little bundle shattered every wall I had propped up around my heart.

Her sister came three years later and wrecked me afresh. Fast forward 18 years, and I am still utterly ruined. These two girls have inspired me, amazed me, brought me to tears and made me so mad I've thrown laundry clear across the room!

They are the chink in my armor. My soft spot. The place that makes me totally vulnerable.

What is a  mother to do? Pray. For them and for yourself. A lot.

Father, I come to You on behalf of my children. Lord, You alone know their hearts and if they have not made You Lord of their lives I pray for them now they You would open their eyes, in order to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith in You. (Acts 26:18)  Do not let the god of this age blind them, but let the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ shine on them and in their hearts to give the light of the knowledge of Your glory. (2 Corinthians 4:4-6) And I pray that You would bestow upon them the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of You, that the eyes of their understanding be enlightened and that they may know what is the hope of Your calling, what are the riches of the glory of Your inheritance in the saints and what is the exceeding greatness of Your power toward us who believe, according to the working of Your mighty power (Ephesians 1:17-19)

Father, I pray that You would establish them in Your word as that which produces reverence for You. (Psalm 119:38) I pray that they keep Your commands and live, that they keep Your law as the apple of their eye, binding it on their fingers and writing it on the tablet of their hearts. (Proverbs 7:2-3) Lord, I ask that You fill them with the knowledge of Your will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, that they may walk worthy of You, fully pleasing You, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of You. (Colossians 1:9-10)

Lord God, I pray that You would make my children dwell in Your secret place and abide under Your shadow. I pray that You would be their refuge and fortress, that You would deliver them from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. I pray that You cover them with Your feathers, and under Your wings they take refuge. (Psalm 91:1-4)

Father, I ask that You give them a heart for obedience. I pray that they honor their father and I, which is the first commandment with promise, so "that it may be well with them and they may live long on the earth.” (Ephesians 6:1-3) I pray that they would heed their father's instruction and not forsake the law of their mother. (Proverbs 1:8) Turn their hearts toward us and ours toward them, O God. (Malachi 4:6)

I pray that You would count them worthy of their calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of Your goodness and the work of faith with power, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in them. (2 Thessalonians 1:11-12) Father, show them that all things work together for good to those who love You, to those who are the called according to Your purpose. (Romans 8:28)  I pray they would walk in wisdom,  redeeming the time, because the days are evil, and that they would understand what Your will is for them. (Ephesians 5:15-17)  Let Your beauty be upon them establishing the work of their hands, yes establish the work of their hands. Psalm 90:17)

Father, I pray that You would raise up godly men for them to marry. Men who love You and who will love my girls the way You love the church. Be Lord over their home. Bless them with children because they are Your heritage and reward. (Psalm 127:3)  Make Your face shine on their family and characterize them as Your very own.

May You, the God of hope, fill them with all joy and peace in believing, that they may abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:13) In Jesus' name, Amen.
