The New Obscenity

The flagship station of the liberal radio network "Air America" has a brand new General Manager...and he's getting a baptism by fire this morning. No way of knowing if this was Scott Elberg's new plan to gain some notoriety for WLIB in New York...but this stunt has gotten the attention of the Secret Service! According to a report by Matt Drudge, one of the leftist talk shows on the station opened an hour yesterday with a little "skit" that featured an announcer saying, "A spoiled child is telling us our Social Security isn't safe anymore, so he is going to fix it for us. Well, here's your answer, you ungrateful whelp": then, you heard the sound of 4 gunshots being fired. The announcer continues-and please forgive my language here, "Just try it, you little bastard." Then, there's the sound of a gun being cocked once more.

Of course, any threat to shoot the President-even when it's supposedly in jest, and especially when nationally broadcast-is going to be investigated by authorities. Actually...when it comes to Air America, "nationally broadcast" is a generous description...but I digress.

We've come to expect nasty rhetoric from, shall we call it, the left side of the dial. But here's a sad twist on the "bad words" of radio's "bad boys." When trash talker Howard Stern takes a day off-as he did, ironically, for the Passover holiday-his producers prepare a "best of" broadcast, if we may call it that. Mindful of mounting public pressure, Stern's engineers "bleep" nearly every questionable reference made on these previously-aired programs, giving his boss at the radio station a day away from the "dump button."

Just what is deemed worthy of censorship on the Howard Stern Show? Mentions of even the scientific anatomical names of reproductive organs...slang references to certain sexual acts...and some bad language. Exempt from the cutting-room floor is any instance of the Lord's name being taken in vain. Every "G-D" and "J-C" is left in place, as if such coarseness somehow makes for more acceptable discourse than Stern's ongoing fascination with sodomy.

If, as Jesus said on the Mount of Beatitudes, "from the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks"...the innards of today's liberal commentators must be a dark place, indeed.
