What should be our response to this person who has committed adultery?
Apparently, it is, "...but for the grace of God, [I] too could fall." If we stop at that, then what hope do any of us have? It implies that the grace of God had been withdrawn from the Senator. God has not withdrawn His grace.
According to the writer, we should not be surprised by sinful behavior. This nullifies expectation of Godly character. What have we done with Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit Who enables us to live a Godly life?
Paul dealt swiftly and strictly with one who had committed sexual sin in the Corinthian church, to bring him to repentance.
Now that this man has repented, we should be looking compassionately at how we can help him be restored to "what [he had] already attained." Phil. 3:18
