The Alabama Senate approved a bill this week that would add the right to life for unborn babies into the Alabama Constitution.

The state Senate approved the bill in a 25-7 vote. The measure had already passed in the state House in March. The proposed amendment will now go to voters on a ballot.

State Rep. Matt Fridy, who sponsored the bill, said if the amendment passes, abortions wouldn’t be illegal. The amendment protects unborn babies in the event that Roe v. Wade is overturned and the states are given the right to regulate abortion.

But local Planned Parenthood leaders said the proposed law would “completely outlaw abortion.”

President Donald Trump had promised during his campaign to nominate “pro-life” justices to the U.S. Supreme Court, who would overturn Roe v. Wade.

Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch was just nominated and confirmed to the court.

It’s unclear how many states would have laws that would ban abortions if Roe v. Wade were overturned. Some estimates, like the one from pro-abortion group NARAL, say 13 states already have laws or constitutional amendments to ban abortions if the case is overturned. Those states are:Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota and West Virginia.
