A group of militants opened fire on a university in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday (Jan. 20), killing at least 20 students. Christian Today reports the attack occurred at Bacha Khan University in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

An undetermined number of militants entered the institution under the cover of thick fog and began shooting at students and teachers.

A police inspector reported that 70 percent of the students escaped the buildings, but some were trapped inside.

Inspector Wazir said, “All students have been evacuated from the hostels, but militants are still hiding in different parts of the university and some students and staff are stuck inside.”

Bacha Khan University teaches over 3,000 students. English lecturer Shabir Khan said that most students were in classes at the time of the attack.
