A ferry carrying 200 people capsized in Bangladesh when a storm hit the Meghna river. Twenty-eight people are known to be dead in the accident; about 100 more are missing and likely drowned.

The ferry was transporting commuters and students near the capital city of Dhaka.

About people 75 survived through swimming to the river bank or rescue. Some survivors reported urging the ship’s captain to steer toward the shore for shelter when the storm hit.

“...he ignored us,” said passenger Abdur Rahman. “The ferry capsized within a few seconds.”

Officials fear that the 100 people unaccounted for died in the accident.

“Now it is more than 20 hours since the ferry sank, so there is no possibility to find anyone alive inside the vessel,” said Saiful Hassan Badal, deputy commissioner of Munshiganj district.

Another ferry sank in the same area of the Meghna river in March 2012. There were 145 casualties Reuters reports.
