Ben Carson Surges into Lead in Polls on Eve of Third Republican Debate

Ben Carson recently was found to be the leading Republican presidential candidate in a new Monmouth University poll.

ABC News reports that, although billionaire businessman Donald Trump has been leading the polls since his entry into the race, a little over three months ago, retired neurosurgeon Carson has finally overtaken him.

Carson currently leads the polls with 26 percent support, while Trump has slipped to 22 percent. The other Republican candidates are much lower, with Florida Sen. Marco Rubio at eight percent and Jeb Bush and Carly Fiorina tied at seven percent each.

Carson was also found to be popular among evangelical voters, many of whom are skeptical of Trump.

However, although Carson is now the frontrunning candidate, ABC News reports that his supporters are not as staunch as Trump’s. Four out of five Carson supporters said they may still change their minds on who they will vote for, while more than half of Trump supporters said that they are completely committed to voting for Trump.

The Republican presidential candidates are set to take the debate stage this Wednesday in Boulder, CO at 8:00 p.m. EST for the third Republican presidential debate.
