Boko Haram Willing to Exchange Kidnapped Girls for Detained Militants

Boko Haram leaders have reportedly stated that they are willing to free over 200 girls kidnapped from a Chibok school in April 2014 in exchange for their own militants who have been detained by the Nigerian government.

Fox News reports the militants had previously suggested the deal while former president Goodluck Jonathan was in office. New president Muhammadu Buhari appears to be more willing to negotiate to stop the terrorist group’s violence than his predecessor.

Buhari’s adviser Femi Adesina said, the government “will not be averse” to negotiating with Boko Haram.

"Most wars, however furious or vicious, often end around the negotiation table," he said.

The number of Boko Haram militants that have been detained by the Nigerian government is unknown. 219 girls remain in Boko Haram captivity.

Witnesses previously said that the Chibok girls have been brainwashed by the militants. Other Boko Haram captives fear them, and the girls have become “teachers” of jihad.
