Pastor Ed Dobson of Calvary Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan, has passed away at the age of 65 after a long battle with ALS.

Fox 17 reports that Dobson passed away on Saturday, December 26. He was well-known for his association with the Moral Majority, led by Reverend Jerry Falwell.

Dobson became pastor of Calvary Church in 1987 and was named “Pastor of the Year” in 1993 by the Moody Bible Institute. He was diagnosed with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, in 2000.

Dobson immigrated to the United States from Northern Ireland when he was 14, according to mlive.com. His story is chronicled in a seven-film series titled “Ed’s Story.”

Dobson was also an editor of Christianity Today magazine and an author of various books.
