Charlie Gard’s Parents Optimistic after Encouraging Medical Tests

Charlie Gard’s parents continue to fight for their son’s life. They are optimistic about a possible improvement in Charlie’s condition after new medical tests were conducted.

Eleven-month-old Charlie has a rare mitochondrial disease that has resulted in brain damage and seizures. The hospital where he was being kept on life support, Great Ormond Street Hospital in the UK, appealed to the courts to take Charlie off life support because they believe he has suffered irreversible brain damage.

The courts granted the hospital’s request which started an ongoing battle for Charlie’s life. Charlie’s parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, along with many supporters, have been fighting to be granted the right to take Charlie to the U.S. so he can undergo experimental treatment which could help his condition.

The Telegraph reports that Charlie underwent a brain scan recently that will determine whether he is a candidate for the experimental treatment.

Dr. Hirano, who carried out the brain scan and is analyzing Charlie’s medical condition, will meet with other doctors today to discuss treatment options for Charlie. The doctor said that a previous brain scan conducted in March did not show evidence of irreversible brain damage.

Results from the current scan will be extremely influential in deciding Charlie’s fate.
