Sundance Film Festival took place January 19 through January 29. Christianity Today reports that a number of Christians attended the festival and had meaningful discussions on topics addressed by the films.

Representatives from the Windrider Forum were present at the film festival, engaging in the discussions and prayer.

The purpose of the Windrider Forum, as stated on their website is “to explore the possibilities of an immersive educational experience at the Sundance Film Festival – with the idea that the Sundance Film Festival could provide a dynamic learning laboratory for students, as Christians, to engage in a cultural dialogue as it takes shape.”

Film festival attendees held a panel discussion on the film Silence, which tells the story of two Jesuit priests who travel to Japan as missionaries in the 17th-century to find one of their missing comrades.

Discussions were also held on the film Whose Streets which deals with subjects of racism by telling the story of Mike Brown who was killed in a police shooting and detailing how the community responded.

In response to the question of why these kind of discussions are important, Christianity Today contributor K. Pastore states:

“But what’s the point of this? Why are these Christians watching movies and talking about faith when they could be doing something else?

Art has energy. Art shares stories. Art cultivates compassion.

Christ calls us to care, love, stand, and protect in our own ways. Windrider helped us to see our place in the world, our duty, our hope.”
