Christian ministry Compassion International has followed through on a promise to build 30 new schools in Haiti five years after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the nation.

The Christian Post reports that the project will serve 25,000 Haitian children and cost $31.2 million to complete. Sponsors from around the world donated money to build the schools.

Compassion’s management support director for Haiti, Matthew Moore said that many families lost homes, schools and churches in the earthquake.

"Many of our church partners had lost buildings. They had nowhere to go to church, they had nowhere to provide for the children,” Moore said.

Compassion International responded to the disaster with plans to construct schools that could withstand natural disasters common to the region.

Moore said, "We've accomplished virtually all the goals we set five years ago. The money that so many generous donors and sponsors gave the Haiti disaster response will be spent how we said it would be spent and we've impacted many of thousands of lives."

"I think all of our staff here, all the sponsors and those who love Compassion can be very proud of what we've accomplished."

Due to some construction setbacks, the project will be completed in April.
